You’re Going to Die! is a children’s story I wrote and delivered to a few close friends and collaborators for re-working. The text uses a strategy of much of my work, exploring one simple idea ad nauseum bonum. This video treatment by Dennis Palazzolo, comprised of original footage and clips lifted from famous movies, features the close-mic’d muttering voiceover of artist Vito Acconci. Since the video was posted online, various video responses and tributes have appeared, and the audio has been used in music, dance, and other contexts. Although the video was a finalist for the 2003 Student Academy Awards, it should be easy to understand, given its blatant trademark violations and copyright infringement, why industry judges could not honor it with an actual award. It was, however, cited as an influence for Spike Jonze’s treatment of Where the Wild Things Are. The version on YouTube has garnered an amusing string of commentary – a text piece unto itself – and has been translated into Spanish.
